Well, that got my attention, so I started reading and researching to find a fabulous service to add to my menu.

We are all surrounded daily by, yes, oxygen. We all know that oxygen “feeds” the cells….and our goal is to always make a healthier cell so that at the dermal level we can produce more collagen and elastin.

“You may be wondering why you still have unwelcome fine lines, wrinkles and a dull complexion when you are surrounded by oxygen. But the truth is, you aren’t. The air we breathe, depending on where you live, is made up of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, argon, neon and other gasses and only about 18% is actual oxygen. This is why many of Hollywood’s biggest starts rely on oxygen facials to get all the benefits of oxygen propelled directly into their skin, without the pore-clogging environmental elements along with it.” (Source: blog.imageskincare.com)

Acne, rosacea and aging skin all respond well to oxygen therapy. You may not be a Hollywood star, but I’m sure you have at least one “red carpet” event this year where you’d like to “glow”!

We forget that our skin is the largest organ in our body. We might also forget that everything we do (or don't do!) and everything we eat has a profound effect on aging and on our skin.

Diet (sugar, dairy, wheat), exercise, sleep, hydration, sunblock, genetics...it all plays a part. Develop good "life" habits and you will see the results in the mirror.

Start slow with small steps. For instance, make a point to drink one more glass of water daily. Sleep one half-hour longer. Drink three less coffees a week. Eat dessert only on weekends.

And last but not least...smile. On the Souli Skinspa Facebook page, a lot of folks were commenting on how beautiful a client of mine looked. Her response? "It was the SMILE that made the difference." Such a great reminder!

Our lips get chapped for a number of reasons: dry cold winter weather, a troubled stomach from excessive eating and drinking, a Vitamin E deficiency, too much spicy food or being in the sun too long. When our lips peel, even lipstick and gloss can’t make them look better and we are continually having to reapply lip balm.

Help can be as simple as reaching for a jar of honey and make a honey pack. This is an age-old remedy and is a natural moisturizer. Put a generous amount of honey on your lips and cover them with a piece of plastic wrap cut to size. Your lips will become moist in a matter of minutes.

Along with the honey pack, you can also do a simple lymphatic massage. Do this massage every morning before putting on your lip color. It will give your lips a rosy and natural glow. Here are the steps:

(1) With the balls of your thumbs, press the lymph nodes that run from underneath your chin toward your ears.
From there the concept of trying to get through the skin evolved in the early 1900's in Germany where practitioners used a rotating wheel to resurface the skin. The concept of using a needle in the US began about 1995 by two brothers, two dermatologists, in Philly. They were using a bevel needle to release scars and wrinkles.

Which brings us to the modern era in needling....the ability to technologically make needles go through the epidermis and prompt the skin's ability to respond with the whole cascade of wound healing, all phases of normal healing and therefore, making the skin better. In about 2000, a German named Hors Libel trademarked what is now referred to as the "dermaroller", where a wheel barrel roller of needles is rolled over the skin. In 2004 it was shown that this technique made the epidermis and dermis thicker and, thus, there was rejuvenation. This rolling technique has been the method used since that time.

In October, 2011, a company in Australia brought to the US distribution rights to the Dermapen, which is not the older technique of the roller but rather a pen device that has an up and down or stamping method, or vertical intrusion into the skin (as opposed to rolling over the skin) which causes less trauma. You can vary the depth of the needle and you have disposable needles, which eliminates danger of contamination. Because we are then making micro openings in the skin, we also get a trans-dermal delivery system to help with the delivery of products into the skin.

I am very excited to now offer the Dermapen technique to my clients. With the pen, I can stamp the skin with tiny microneedles that, in turn, trigger the body to naturally stimulate collagen and elastin. There is little or no downtime and dramatic changes can be seen over a few months' time. We can get fabulous results with acne scarring, keloids, stretch marks, lip lines and just overall firming and toning. An added benefit, since there is no heat with the Dermapen, you don't run the risk of hyperpigmentation, which can result from many lasers. (Source: “Microneedling Review" by Dr. Gordon Sasaki)
Drink rooibos tea to keep wrinkles at bay and beautify from the inside. Japanese researchers have found that rooibos slows cell damage and halts the aging process. Derived from the African red bush plant, rooibos is loaded with more antioxidants and minerals than green or white tea. Look for it at your local supermarket. Brew as directed and drink two cups a day.
This simple and safe technique involves a light shaving with a small blade on the top layer of skin (epidermis). The process is painless and not only removes dead skin but also has the added benefit of removing fine vellus hair or “peach fuzz.” Dermaplaning helps with dead skin buildup, fine lines, uneven texture, and superficial pigmentation. It leaves the skin feeling smooth and absolutely glowing.

Many people with rosacea or sensitive skin are not good candidates for microdermabrasion due to the vacuum used. However, Dermaplaning can be done safely on mild forms of rosacea. The treatment is also a great go-to treatment option for those who are pregnant or nursing and cannot use topical exfoliating agents and acids that could be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Over the last couple weeks, I have had a few clients react to products, but we weren't sure which one. In cases like this, I always instruct my clients to perform a product patch test.

If you ever have a reaction or if you have sensitive skin that you think might react, here's how you should perform a patch test on yourself.

Skin Allergy Patch Test:

Clean a quarter-size area of skin on either your neck or inside of your wrist.

With a clean cotton ball or cotton swab, apply the product or skin care recipe to the cleansed test spot.

Let the product dry. Don't wash or cover the test spot for 24 hours.

Examine the area periodically over the 24-hour period. If you experience redness, burning, itching, swelling, skin abrasion, eruption, or irritation, in or around the test spot, do not use the product without consulting your doctor or esthetician first.

Give your skin some love by following these three great summer skin tips.

1. Soothe sunburn with vinegar.

Use a cotton ball soaked in white vinegar to soothe your sunburned face and a paper towel or washcloth soaked in vinegar for the rest of your body. Hold on skin for 15 minutes. Vinegar helps to relieve pain and itching and also prevents blisters from forming.

2. Fade sun/age spots with lemon juice.

Citric acid in lemon juice helps dissolve dead skin cells and expose new fresh skin underneath. Lemon juice also contains vitamin C, which is an antioxidant that protects you from aging and sun damage.

3. Relieve itchy bug bites with banana!

Who knew?! Rub the inside white part of a banana peel directly on a bug bite for 2-3 mins. This helps to moisturize and calm irritation.
The FDA has issued new rules and there are two phrases you should understand.

1) "Broad Spectrum" means the product protects you against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. Both are linked to cancer and cause wrinkles.

2) "Water Resistant" indicates when swimmers should reapply (40 mins after lighter formulas, 80 mins for more enduring ones).

Remember, what's more important than the SPF number on the product is how often you reapply, especially when sweating or doing a sport. Also important, wear your sunblock DAILY. We are even exposed to damaging rays under cloudy skies!

Have a fabulous summer. And make it a safe one!Souli Skinspa™http://www.blogger.com/profile/07459891989951051235noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8662448984222143233.post-82648094349417849702013-04-16T10:09:00.000-07:002013-04-16T10:25:39.575-07:00The Inside-Outside Approach to Vitamin DVitamin D is manufactured in our skin. As we age, our skin's ability to make Vitamin D declines. This deficiency has been linked to rosacea, eczema and psoriasis.

Deep wrinkles on the face and body are a direct result of bone density loss, which results from a lack of Vitamin D. The vitamin is also critical in regulating hormones and keeping other problems at bay, like depression, seasonal affective disorder, PMS and sleeping problems.

We all know our body makes Vitamin D when directly exposed to the sun, and most of us meet some of our requirements this way. However, we still need to limit sun exposure by wearing protective clothing and SPF of at least 15 to prevent premature aging, cancer and other skin problems. That's why we should also take Vitamin D supplements.

Recommended dosage ranges form 400 to 1200 IU's per day. Please check with your healthcare provider on what is right for you.
Lately, the number one problem I've seen with clients is increased breakouts caused by extremely dry skin.

Especially in these dry winter months, it's important for ALL skin types to moisturize. Often people with oily or combination skin will not use a moisturizer, thinking it will make them break out more. Actually, the opposite is true.

Not using a moisturizer will cause your skin to get dehydrated, and it can then trigger your skin to produce more oil. Remember, there is a big difference in your skin between water and oil. If you have oily skin, you still have to hydrate, both inside and out. Make sure your moisturizer, and all makeup, is "oil-free" or "noncomedogenic" (nonclogging).

One of the most interesting pieces of information I've learned as an esthetician is that the body's internal organs correspond to specific zones on the face. You also have these mapping points on your ears, soles of the feet, hands and abdomen. These maps are also known as "holograms."

Here's a good example: In an acne consult, I look at what part of the face is breaking out, which gives me information about the cause of the acne and other pieces of information that can help determine treatment. For instance, breakouts on the forehead relate to the intestines. Getting someone with forehead acne on probiotics to reduce inflammation from the inside out usually gives quick results.
Three quick and tasty tips for preventing pimples.

Low-Glycemic Diet

Studies have shown that people who follow a low-glycemic diet tend to have clearer skin. Focus on eating vegetables and whole grains and skip the processed sugars. Low-glycemic foods help to regulate your body’s natural insulin. When you have excess insulin your body’s hormones can rage out of control.

Lemon

Drink warm water with lemon every morning. Lemon acts as a diuretic and helps to flush out acne-causing toxins and bacteria in the small intestine.

H2O and Produce

Of course you need to drink eight glasses of water a day (at a minimum) for clear skin, but eating fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as cucumbers and grapefruits, will keep cells hydrated, too. Some say eating produce plumps cells even better than drinking water.

How have you modified your diet to benefit your skin?

Souli Skinspa™http://www.blogger.com/profile/07459891989951051235noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8662448984222143233.post-39392010674874454372012-12-20T08:00:00.000-07:002012-12-20T08:00:06.657-07:00Intense Moisturizing for the Winter: Hyaluronic Acid
Just about everyone who has come in for treatments in the last few weeks has complained of dry skin. As we enter into the dry winter months, this becomes a problem, especially here in Colorado, and there is one ingredient you can add to your daily regimen to kick your hydration up a notch.

You might have heard of an ingredient called “hyaluronic acid” that is often included in skincare moisturizers, eye creams and lip gloss and is even used as an injectible filler. Here’s an excerpt from an LA Times article that sums it up nicely:

“Hyaluronic acid is a viscous, gooey substance that’s a key component in connective tissues. It lubricates joints and even sustains the shape of the eyeballs. Dr. Nowell Solish, a cosmetic dermatologist, says it’s important to understand that all hyaluronic acid is the same. ‘In fact, so much so that your hyaluronic acid is identical to mine and identical to any species even. Originally before they started making it synthetically, they used to get it from a rooster.’”

And from another article in SkinInc.com:

“Hyaluronic acid is the key for maintaining water substances in human skin. Due to aging, natural hyaluron concentration in the skin decreases at any alarmingly increasing rate throughout time. Accordingly, the skin’s ability to maintain moisture is weakened and it gives the appearance of being dry and rough. When hyaluronic acid is applied back to the skin, it penetrates the dermis, combines with water, and promotes microcirculation and nutrient absorption. It forms an air-permeable layer to help keep the skin moist and smooth. The result is rapid skin rejuvenation, diminishing the appearance of wrinkles, crow’s feet and other cosmetic signs of age around the eyes caused by sun exposure, smoking stress and other common factors.”

Hyaluronic acid is a large molecule so it has the ability to hold 1000 times its weight in water. It is a natural key component of the dermis. It effectively binds water to cells and is responsible for the elasticity and resiliency of the skin. The most effective way to use it topically is as an injectible filler, because it naturally occurs in our skin and the body doesn't see it as foreign, but when applied manually and massaged into the skin, there is a percentage of concentration that absorbs into the skin. When added to your moisturizer daily, it helps moisturize, plump and soften as well as helps stimulate more collagen production at the cellular level.

Hyaluronic acid is also very effective to take internally to hydrate skin and lubricate joints.Souli Skinspa™http://www.blogger.com/profile/07459891989951051235noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8662448984222143233.post-45835423418916090562012-12-06T08:00:00.000-07:002012-12-06T08:00:04.061-07:006 Reasons to Try Reiki HealingNew to Reiki? It’s a Souli Skinspa specialty, and if you’re curious about the benefits of this practice, the following information will give you a taste. If you have more questions, ask me. I’m a certified Reiki Master.

1. Treat ailments.

Studies have found that Reiki is effective in treating both minor ailments and major disease. The next time you have a cold, feel a migraine coming on, or have a nervous belly, consider Reiki. With little effort from you, you might be feeling better soon.

And if you have a more serious disease, Reiki can help there, too. Many people going through chemotherapy treatments rely on Reiki to feel better and so do people with arthritis, heart disease, and post-operative pain, among other things. Keep in mind that Reiki should be used in conjunction with medical treatments. It does not replace them.

2. Reiki is not invasive.

During the session, you keep all of your clothing on and lie or sit still for 60 minutes, which is the standard session length. (You can opt for a session of any length between 5 and 90 minutes.) Reiki involves a gentle lying on of hands to your body to promote balance among all the energy systems.

3. You get a chance to escape.

Your life is hectic. Your mind is always working. That’s the state of things these days. Reiki is an opportunity for you to truly relax and let go. I will guide you through a meditation exercise that will help you to rest your mind and your body. In fact, it’s likely you’ll feel very warm and “floaty” during a Reiki session.

4. Ease your mind.

Just as Reiki helps to treat physical ailments, Reiki also successfully treats depression, anxiety, and other emotional distress.

5. Promote overall wellness.

Even without a distinguishable ailment, Reiki is an excellent way to promote overall wellness. It heals the body mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Reiki improves your immune function, helps you to sleep sounder, and increases your energy levels.

6. If you fall in love with Reiki, you can take a class and become attuned.

I went through “attunement” or Reiki training from a Reiki Master. In training you learn how to use energies from our higher power (whatever higher power you believe in) and direct that energy to places within someone else’s body or your own body to promote healing and overall well being. This is a very basic explanation of Reiki healing. Trust me when I say it’s much more involved and really quite amazing.Souli Skinspa™http://www.blogger.com/profile/07459891989951051235noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8662448984222143233.post-11467066237088754832012-11-21T09:33:00.000-07:002012-11-21T09:33:00.132-07:00Holiday Skincare Specials. With the holidays rapidly approaching, you are probably thinking about sweet potato and pumpkin dishes around the dinner table. I know I am. The next time you are at the store, throw a few extra sweet potatoes and cans of pumpkin in your cart. These colorful antioxidants not only serve as comfort food during the holidays, but they also provide magnificent benefits to your skin.

Eat Two Sweet Potatoes a Week

You’ll get more beta carotene, an antioxidant that promotes collagen production, out of one sweet potato than you will out of any other fruit or vegetable. Research suggests that two servings a week will motivate your skin to block UV rays on its own and reverse sun damage.

Make Your Own Pumpkin Facial

Pumpkin contains enzymes to exfoliate, zinc to heal inflammation, and vitamin C to ward off free radicals. One pumpkin facial a week will leave your skin supple and bright. Try this recipe:

4 tsp. canned pumpkin

1 tsp. milk

1 tsp. honey

1 tsp. brown sugar

Dampen your skin and apply the mixture for up to ten minutes. Remove with cool water, pat dry, and moisturize.
LED is a noninvasive approach to working with light. During the past ten years, independent worldwide research from organizations such as NASA has shown that light applied in the correct wavelength stimulates intercellular communication, resulting in skin rejuvenation. Benefits include:

Rejuvenates and stimulates ATP at the cellular level, which in turn helps produce more collagen and elastin.

Helps push product down into your skin for better delivery.

Reduces inflammation and redness; helps strengthen weakened capillaries.

Calms and soothes skin irritations and helps heal wounds.

Encourages a natural chemical reaction within the skin, uniting hydrogen and oxygen to create moisture.

Relaxes mind, body, and soul!

Sleep on your back. When you sleep on your stomach you restrict blood flow to the skin.

Keep two large spoons in your freezer at all times. Place the cold spoons over your eyes for a few minutes to reduce swelling.

Eliminate soda from your diet. Soda contains phosphates (dangerous additives) and sodium. Too much salt in your diet leads to puffy eyes and face.

Grate cucumber and wrap it in cheese cloth. Place the entire cloth across your eyes for maximum impact.

Chamomile has a lot of great qualities, including anti-inflammatory qualities. Soak two teabags for 30 seconds or so in water and then place the bags over your eyes for several minutes. Or, if you want to use fewer teabags, make a cup of tea and soak a washcloth in the tea.

Demand for anti-aging ingredients has put progressive age management of skincare at the top of the list for consumers. Sixty-two percent of women between 35 and 54 and more than sixty-five percent of women 55 and older say that aging is their number one reason for using skincare products.

The most cutting-edge anti-aging research involves stem cell technology using plant stem cells, which have proven to protect skin from UV oxidative stress and inhibit inflammation, control collagen loss and tissue damage, and combat destructive free radical injury.

Stem cells are un-programmed cells that can differentiate into a cell with specific functions. They are related to longevity and have a unique growth characteristic allowing them to make identical copies of themselves. Skin stem cells generate new skin to replace the cells lost every day and influence wound-healing. Healthy stem cells mean healthier, younger-acting skin.

With current applications for treating and managing aging skin, scientists are focusing their research on adult stem cells located in the skin and are studying the potential of this cell type, coupled with its function related to chronological aging to help understand how the skin's aging clock can be reset. Plants have stem cells comparable to human stem cells. Unlike humans, plants contain totipotent stem cells with the potential to regenerate a whole plant.

This action gives scientific rise to the benefits of the plant stem cells' ability to regenerate new leaves, flowers, seeds, or a whole, fresh plant. Unlike human stem cells, plant stem cells can de-differentiate and become a stem cell.

This is an exciting time for skincare as a new approach to fight the aging process involves stem cells. It's all about extending and preserving the life energy of skin cells to help yield younger-looking results. We all want to reset that aging clock!
